Electrons to Chemicals

Research: 2018-2021

Large-scale electrification of the production of fuels and basic chemicals provides a leading sustainable chemical cluster.

Research

The possibilities for electrification of the production of fuels and basic chemicals are being investigated in the context of the Interreg-2-Seas subsidy program. Electrification has proven itself successfully in the laboratory. It is now time to take a step further in the so-called technical readiness levels through pilots and demonstration. Two practical tests are carried out in a container-sized setup:

  • the production of DME, a sustainable fuel comparable to diesel, produced with CO2 and green hydrogen.
  • the production of basic chemical products such as syngas and formic acid based on CO2 and electrons.

The pilot setups allow for the technology to further prove itself and to learn what is needed for further upscaling. During and after the pilot phase, companies that are now involved as observer partners can proceed with scaling up the electrification techniques.

Potential

Large-scale implementation and upscaling of the investigated techniques within E2C, results in:

  • lower CO2
  • the possibility of actually making use of the abundance of renewable electricity in the future.
  • cleaner production of fuels and (consumer) products.

Business opportunities

  • Up-scaling ensures that the E2C processes become more profitable.
  • Production processes become more sustainable.
  • By practising these technologies further and further Northwest Europe can become a globally leading sustainable chemical cluster.
